We know it's been a while...
If you’re looking for a fast-paced, laugh-out-loud action-comedy, look no further than London Calling (2025). The film, which follows mediocre hitman Tommy Ward (Josh Duhamel) and his socially awkward apprentice Julian (Jeremy Ray Taylor), is a blast of pure, unapologetic mayhem. While it certainly leans into the absurd, its core chemistry makes it wildly entertaining.
The Cast: Charm, Goofiness, and a Real Ass
The success of London Calling rests squarely on its cast, who deliver performances that range from charmingly goofy to genuinely despicable:
Josh Duhamel as Tommy Ward: Duhamel carries the movie with incredible charisma. While his version of Tommy Ward is so goofy that he wasn't always believable as a hardened hitman, Duhamel’s natural acting ability makes the character impossible not to root for. He masterfully balances the action with the comedy.
Rick Hoffman as Benson: Hoffman's performance as Benson, Julian’s demanding father, was perfect—he was a real ass! He makes for a wonderfully detestable obstacle in Tommy's path, fueling the central conflict and adding a great foil to the protagonist's antics.
Aidan Gillen as Freddy Darby: Seeing Aidan Gillen pop up was a nice surprise! His presence adds an unexpected depth of intensity to the film's criminal underworld.
The Peak of On-Screen Mayhem
The film shines brightest when it fully embraces its own absurdity and chaos. There was one particularly high-stakes moment that had the audience completely invested, turning the viewing experience into a collective shout. That feeling of being on the edge of your seat, yelling, "Put the glasses on!" just so Tommy could line up a decent shot at an enemy, was the highlight of the movie. That blend of genuine tension and utter comedic confusion is what makes this action-comedy work.
My One Gripe: The Sort of Unresolved Ending
My only significant complaint—and the part that truly left me frustrated—is the unresolved storyline involving young Jeremy at the end. I hated that we never saw what happened to him, as far as his life went with regards his Dad. It felt like a dropped plot thread, especially because his father did not deserve him. It leaves a disappointing, loose end in an otherwise tight and fun caper, and I sincerely hope it’s a setup for a sequel. I mean Benson did blow up at the end, maybe it was some karma and a lesson learnt?
Final Verdict
Despite that one glaring omission in the finale, London Calling is a fast, funny, and surprisingly big-hearted movie that delivers excellent entertainment. It’s the perfect popcorn flick if you’re looking for high energy and constant laughs.
