Moon Phase

Understanding the Dark Moon Phenomenon The term "dark moon" refers to the last visible crescent of a waning Moon.

Its duration is dependent on its ecliptic latitude and can last anywhere between 1.5 and 3.5 days.

In modern astronomical terms, the new moon occurs during the middle of the dark period, when the Moon and Sun are in conjunction.

  • The dark moon is a time of contemplation! Focus on yourself and connecting to your very being ie mind, body and soul.

Dark moon as described in Wikipedia:

The Dark Moon is the waning crescent phase that immediately precedes the New Moon. It's often referred to as the balsamic phase of the New Moon. Unlike the New Moon, again the Dark Moon is not a time for manifestation, but rather a period for reflection and contemplation.

  • TIMING: Moon rises at 3 am and sets at mid-afternoon, best effects between these times.

  • TIME FRAMES: Moon is 10 1/2-14 days after the full moon.

  • SUGGESTED SPELL WORKS: Addictions, change, divorce, enemies, justice, obstacles, quarrels, removal, separation, stopping stalkers and theft.

  • REASON: Rest.

  • PAGAN HOLIDAY: Samhain.

  • GODDESS: Kali's Moon.

  • ENERGY: Dark Goddesses.

  • OFFERINGS: Honesty.

  • THEME: Justice.

  • TAROT: Justice.

  • CRYSTAL: Labradorite.

  • STAR SIGN: These do not have a direct correlation to the astrological moon signs as there are 12 signs and only eight phases, so the sign associated to each phase differs from month to month. However, the indications of how these align can be seen below with new and full moons and of course there are references such as what sign the moon is in, at different times of the year and phases etc. For example: In Scorpio, the Dark Moon is all about power. In Sagittarius, the Dark Moon encourages adventure. In Capricorn, the Dark Moon motivates you to work hard and control what you can. In Aquarius, the Dark Moon asks you to focus on humanitarian endeavours.

Worth noting: From a magickal perspective, the Dark Moon is the roughly three days in which the moon is not visible to us. The New Moon is when we see the first sliver of the waxing moon, also called the ‘Horns of Isis’ in reference to the moon horns the Goddess Isis wears. The ‘horns' (or tips) of the crescent always point to the left when the moon is waxing and to the right when it’s waning.
